What it is
An RDIMM differs from a plain module by one component: a register between the memory controller and the chips repeats the address signals. That lets a channel carry more modules, so the server reaches hundreds of gigabytes without losing stability. Error correction catches a single-bit fault on the fly, so the machine keeps running where consumer memory would corrupt the result.

FAQ
Will it work in a desktop PC?
No. A registered module only runs on server and workstation platforms whose memory controller supports it. A consumer board will not post.
Can I mix it with modules from another vendor?
Technically yes, if capacity, rank, speed and type match. In practice put identical modules in one channel, otherwise the whole channel drops to the slowest one.
What if the platform cannot reach this speed?
The module falls back to whatever the controller supports. That is normal, but paying for speed the platform never uses makes little sense.
