Licences are counted together with the hardware
Software is the last thing people think about, and that is exactly where the budget breaks. A server operating system is counted per core, a hypervisor per socket, some subscriptions per user. A dual-socket machine with a high core count costs noticeably more in licences than it appears while the hardware is still being chosen.
What to establish before buying
- The counting unit. Cores, sockets, users or devices. It decides how many licences the same machine needs.
- Term. Perpetual licence or renewable subscription, and what happens when the subscription lapses.
- Transfer. Whether the licence can move to another machine after a hardware replacement.
